Q8 Discuss the main causes of the French Revolution.
Ans8 (a) Despotic rule of Louis XVI Due to financial crisis the king was forced to increase the taxes. These were mostly paid by the third estate.
(b) Privileges and Burden of the French society Only 10%of the French population was comprised of first and second estate. They were exempted from the taxes. Rest 90% of the population bore the burden of the taxes. This discrimination led to the revolution by the 3rd estate.
(c) Inspiration by the Philosophers The Philosophers like Locke, Rousseau and Montesquieu spread the idea of getting equal freedom, equal laws and equal opportunities.
Other than these the Storming of Bastille prison, Rising prices of bread and educated middle class also played an equal role in French Revolution.
