The French Revolution

Q8 Discuss the main causes of the French Revolution.
Ans8 (a) Despotic rule of Louis XVI     Due to financial crisis the king was forced to increase the taxes. These were mostly paid by the third estate.
(b) Privileges and Burden of the French society     Only 10%of the French population was comprised of first and second estate. They were exempted from the taxes. Rest 90% of the population bore the burden of the taxes. This discrimination led to the revolution by the 3rd estate.
(c) Inspiration by the Philosophers        The Philosophers like Locke, Rousseau and Montesquieu spread the idea of getting equal freedom, equal laws and equal opportunities. 
                        Other than these the Storming of Bastille prison, Rising prices of bread and educated middle class also played an equal role in French Revolution.

Q6 How did the women suffer in France during the old regime?
Ans6 (a) During the old regime, most women worked to earn a living.
(b) Most of them were not educated or trained to do any job. So they worked as fruits, flowers and vegetables sellers, domestic servants or laundressers etc
(c) Working women had to take care of their family too, had to fetch water, queue up for bread etc.
                         Therefore it can be said that women suffered a lot during the Old Regime.
Q7 How did storming of Bastille became the main cause of the French Revolution?
Ans7 Storming of Bastille became the main cause of the French Revolution because of the following reasons
(a) While the National Assembly was busy at Versailles drafting a constitution, the rest of France faced turmoil. Due to bad harvest, the price of bread increased.
(b) This situation worsened when the baker's started hoarding supplies.
(c) Women who stood in queues at the bakery stormed and destroyed the shops. At the same time the king had ordered troops to move into Paris.
                     As a result on 14 July the angry crowd stormed and destroyed Bastille. It was hated by all as it stood for the despotic powers of the king.

Ans3 (a) The constitution of France began with a Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizens.
(b) Rights such as right to life, freedom of speech,freed of opinion, equality before law were established as natural and inalienable rights.
(c) It was the duty of the state to protect each citizen's natural rights.
Q4 List and explain the successful achievements of the National Assembly from 1789-1791.
Ans4 Successful achievements of the National Assembly
(a) Adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizens which upheld the equality of all  before law, eligibility of all for public offices and freedom of speech and expression.
(b) Burden of taxation must be borne by all.
(c) A new constitution was formed providing a constitutional monarchy. Powers of monarch were limited and legislative powers were given to the National Assembly.
Q5 Who were Jacobins? What was their role in emergence of France as a Republic?
Ans5 (a)  Jacobins were the most radical and ruthless of the political groups formed in the wake of the French Revolution.
(b) They were the members of the Democratic club established in 1789.
(c) They were led by Maximilian Robespierre.
(d) Angered by the short supplies and high prices of food grains Jacobins stormed the palace of the Tuileries.
                The king's guards were killed and the king was held hostage for several hours. The assembly later, voted to imprison the royal family. Elections were held in which every man of 21 years and above got right to vote. The Convention was known as newly elected assembly, which abolished monarchy and declared France a Republic.

3 The fortress-prison of Bastille was stormed by people for ammunition and was destroyed completely.
